I have had the opportunity to work with my Yoga instructor Nicky Poole at 889 Yoga over the last couple years and more lately while I train for the Gobi Desert March. She teaches with such passion and focus to help her students for individual reasons they have chosen to work on the mat. For some, its stress release, some flexibility, inner peace, fitness, strength, community or challenge. I think for me it’s a little bit of everything. I definitely leave each session feeling rejuvenated with a feeling of progress, even if sometimes the ego bruised on a new balance posture, that tend to my nemesis.

Why YOU should be practicing Yin Yoga

Yin Yoga targets the connective tissue in our bodies. When we are participating in most other forms of exercise we are targeting the muscles (the yang tissue). Yin yoga targets the fascia, tendons, ligaments, and the entire joint capsule. Connective tissue runs though and encases our muscles. The Yin tissue in our bodies needs to be exercised in the appropriate way. Yin tissue responds to a gentle, static and persistent stress. This is why we hold out postures for 3-5 minutes, to allow the yin tissue to respond.
